A Scary Thing...

Today we had Ian evaluated for Autism. This may be a surprise to you, or you might have been thinking what the hell is wrong with this kid for a long time. I haven't really blogged about it, or talked about it because it's been such a hard thing for me to deal with. Someone from the Wawa house, which is part of the Eden Institute came out today and did his evaluation. She said, what I expected. He has some red flags for autism (lack of imitation and pretend play, loss of language, extreme frustration, obsession with lights/fans/wheels) but he has some great things too (pointing, good eye contact, strong bond with people, interest in other kids). She didn't think that she could say he was or wasn't autistic at this point, but she thinks he has a social and communication delay. He is going to get developmental intervention three times a week and an evaluation for speech. We will reassess him in three months and see were we are at.

I feel ok with this. It's essentially what I thought that she would say. I hope that with the increased therapy he will learn to communicate and his frustration level (and the tantrums) will lessen.

Kelli--it's Barbara from BBC. I left BBC, too much drama for me, but I saw your post about Ian tonight and just wanted to say good for you for being such a proactive mom and having such a positive outlook. I've been there with you the whole way with our "spirited" boys, and I still have my suspicions about Aiden too. I just want you to know I am thinking about you and Ian! Good luck with everything, he is lucky to have such a great mom!

Hi Kelli,
Just read your post and I'm just here to let you know that I'm thinking about you too. I'll also cross my fingers that the increased therapy will help Ian learn to communicate in order to ease his frustration level. Keep us updated!

Hi Kelli--

I have read your posts at BBC, but I haven't posted there in a while. As Barbara said, the drama was just a little overwhelming.

Anyway, I have a 14 month old with some delays and I have been terrified about asd pretty much since the day he was born.

He has a gross motor delay because of hypotonia, but so far his verbal/social skills are good. They were not always this way, however. We have had an MRI and EEG, both of which were normal.

Like you posted, our son has a HUGE head--over the 100th. It's a little more complicated in our situation since dh also has a huge head and so do I. DS is also huge all over--over the 100th in height and over the 90th in weight. Basically no one knows what it means.

Sorry to write a novel. I would love to chat sometime about all this--it's pretty hard to worry all by yourself.

Have a great day.
